Activities
Bird-watching: There are approximately 40 species of birds from the beach to the forest, many of which can be viewed from your bure or in the plantation. Our special bird is the Silktail ( on Vanua Levu Island indigenous only to our area on the Tunuloa Peninsula). Other specialities are - Orange Dove, Multi-coloured Fruit Dove, Barking Pigeon, Red-breasted Musk Parrot, and Scarlet Robin. The Wattled Honeyeater, Orange-breasted Honeyeater, Polynesian Triller, Spotted Fantail, Fiji Goshawk, White-breasted Wood Swallow and Coconut Lory are some of those resident around the bures. We have a very good local guide who can help you find the rarer species. Recently the Giant Honeyeater, Blue-crested Broadbill, Long-legged Warbler and Polynesian Starling have been added to the list.
Swimming: The clear blue waters of Devo Beach are safe for swimming and snorkelling. Our two rivers, Meru and Natovotovo have several delightful swimming holes in beautiful settings. One is secluded. They are always warm and inviting. They are about 20 minutes walk from the bures.
Walks: There are forest walking tracks. As rainforests in Fiji are usually privately owned it is not normally easy to obtain access into them and so this Lodge offers a unique opportunity. Our special bird-watchers' trail leads from the Lodge to Mt Benau. Here you may see a wide range of bush birds, including the Silktail, Ground Dove, Fiji Warbler, Slaty Flycatcher and Giant Honeyeater plus wide views of the Pacific. Other trails lead around the plantation and to the beach. For those with special walking fitness a track leads over the ranges to Natewa Bay and then to Napuka. You return via the bus.
Snorkelling: Flippers, masks and snorkels are kept at the Lodge. Tropical fish abound around the coast with good snorkelling off Devo Beach in calm weather. Some sort of footwear should be worn to protect feet. Snorkelling is usually done at low tide and for safety we recommend our guide Vodo goes with you. Even our rivers have their own coloured fish.
Local Entertainment: The families employed on the plantation sing beautifully and will happily put on an evening of music and the yangona ceremony.
Relaxing. If you just want to relax, there is ample opportunity for this, with the occasional dip in the river swim hole to cool off. There is a small library for your use.
Yachting. Enquire from Bill Kesteven about yacht rides to nearby islands.
